How did you know you were ready to write your latest book?
Writing, for me, is a process of reading, researching, imagining; and once the thought, idea, scene or sequence emerges in my head – generally it appears unannounced as a montage, or film sequence – I need to iron it out, organise it and finally narrativise it, then letting all of that ferment and bubble inside of me. And then eventually, when volume builds-up, it comes pouring out all at once.
I knew it was time to write it when it came pouring out.
What were the most challenging sections?
The two most challenging sections were how I wanted to weave the flashback into the narrative, and how I wanted to end the book. For the life of me, I could not finish the book, I had lived in it for so long that I couldn’t find a way out. And wanted to keep the hope of a sequel alive.
Is the reader present for you as you write?
No. I don’t think I did. I wrote it as a coming together of a long held dream to write something that my childhood friend, Ujan and I could make together. I wanted to write an action-packed historical fiction story that we didn’t have either as young adults, or now.
What are you currently working on?
I’m working on a book on dacoits in the chambal valley, as a way to perhaps expand the world of Zoraver. Also, a proposal on the sequel to Zoraver.
What book are you reading?
I’m reading Babel by RF Kuang, and at the same time re-reading Harry Potter, because I wanted to see how JK Rowling layered a world book-by-book (I know there are other brilliant authors who have done excellent world building, but I just wanted to access the lowest hanging fruit! Also, it’s Bloomsbury, our publisher!)
