MT View: Someone had to do it and Balen did it

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has continued to dismantle illegal structures in significant commercial buildings in the city.

Mayor Balen Shah demolished several illegal structures in different parts of the city. A few days ago, city officials destroyed some illegal structures of a commercial building in Naya Baneshwar, Kathmandu Mall, and RB Complex. Shah went to Alfa House in Naya Baneshwar and directed the building owner to present the blueprint of the building. There was a verbal altercation between the owner and Mayor Shah. Later, Mayor Shah demolished the basement of the building after finding it illegal.

The Kathmandu Metropolitan city triggered the drive to clear the basements for parking vehicles by issuing a 35- days to the owners of the commercial buildings. Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) asserted that the encroachers will not be allowed to continue violating the laws. ‘Illegal construction work done by encroaching public or government land and using ground floor or basement as shops when its purpose is specified for parking during the design approval process is automatically illegal,’ he said in a statement. He has vowed to take action against those violating the existing laws.

Many business houses are illegally running businesses in the basements that are meant for parking. Due to this, there is a lack of parking in the city. Many vehicles are parked outside the city causing traffic jams.

Although those affected by the demolitions have opposed the drive, it is the right move. Someone had to do it and Balen did it. Although it temporarily affects a few, it permanently benefits all. Balen shouldn’t discriminate between those who have power and who don’t. All should be treated equally.
